L. Rutundu is located on the tranquil slopes of Mount Kenya just outside the National Park and north east of the main peaks.

Lake Alice was named after the Duchess of Gloucester, who visited Kenya just after the lake was discovered. Slightly higher up the mountain, just inside the National Park, we find Lake Alice.

Lake Ellis is one of the Glacial lakes of mount Kenya, the lake is found on the eastern part of Kenya, Its well accessed through The Chogoria Gate. Its found in the high altitudes of 3470 meters above sea level.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nanyuki – Lake Rutundu 3100M

    Leave Nanyuki at 8:00am to Lake Rutundu via Rutundu road head for lunch. After lunch, hike to Lake Rutundu, a walk that can take a maximum of 30minutes. Dinner and overnight stay at Rutundu road head campsite.

  • Day 2: Lake Rutundu 3100M – Lake Alice 3550M

    After breakfast hike for 2 – 4 hours to Lake Alice. You can opt to spend an overnight here at Lake Alice or descend back to Rutundu campsite for dinner and overnight stay. Please note// There is no road access from Rutundu to Lake Alice so the vehicle will be left at Rutundu campsite where there is an access to Lake Ellis .

  • Day 3: Lake Ellis 3470M

    Drive from Rutundu road head to Lake Ellis where we shall spend a 3rd and the last night.

    Afternoon walk to mugi hill that takes about 1-2 hours.

  • Day 4: Lake Ellis – Nithi Water Fall 3250M – Nanyuki

    Drive for a short distance from the road head where we shall leave the vehicle and walk for 30-40 minute to Nithi water fall. After visiting the waterfall drive down via chogoria forest to Nanyuki or to your next destination.

TECHNICAL CLIMBING GEAR FOR NELION AND BATIAN PEAKS

The weather can vary hugely but commonly you would climb in quite a few layers. For example a base layer, insulated Gilet, softshell jacket, hardshell jacket, thin softshell trousers, hat under your helmet, liner socks inside your climbing shoes and possibly close-fitting fingerless gloves. You may also need a warm belay jacket at stances.

CLIMBING HARDWARE

  • Pair of 50m half or twin ropes
  • Climbing Harness
  • Helmet (& warm hat/balaclava to fit under it)
  • Rock shoes (recommended not to have too tight a fit and consider wearing thin socks inside)
  • Belay/rappel plate to suit double rope above
  • 3 HMS Karabiners
  • 2 locking Karabinas
  • 4+ short slings
  • 2x Prussic loops
  • Nuts/wires size 1-9
  • Cams size approx 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 (more if you have them) to suit cracks approx 20-50mm wide

  • Small (~25L) climbing pack – Large enough for a spare warm belay jacket, gloves/mitts, emergency bivvy/blizzard bag, ~1 Litre of water, sweets, chocolate, camera.
