Lake Ellis is one of the Glacial lakes of mount Kenya, the lake is found on the eastern part of Kenya, Its well accessed through The Chogoria Gate. Its found in the high altitudes of 3470 meters above sea level.

Sirimon coming off the west of Mount Kenya passes through the dry side of the mountain with its giant trees and rocky terrain.

Detailed Itinerary

  • Day 1: Nanyuki – Lake Ellis

     Altitude: 1900M – 3470m

    Hike Time: 3 ½ hrs

    Pick up from Nairobi at 6:30 am and travel to Chogoria town via Meru town. Meet with the other hiking crew(porters and chef) and take a 4×4 truck to Chogoria gate for lunch

    After lunch start your trek through Hagenia and the heath moorland forest to Lake Ellis . Overnight at Lake Ellis campsite.( camping in tent).

  • Day 2: Lake Ellis – Mintos

    Altitude: 3400m-4278m

    Hike Time: 6 hrs

    After a warm breakfast start your trek following the trail up the Gorges Valley. Beautiful views overlooking the mountain and behind you the Giants Billiards Table and Mugi hills. Picnic lunch served en-route. Dinner and Overnight at Mintos hut.(Camping in tent)

  • Day 3: Mintos – Lenana Summit – Judimere

    Altitude: 4278m- 4985m-3300m.

    Hike Time: 8-10 hrs

    Summit day

    You will be woken up at around 2:00 am and after tea and biscuits attempt the summit at 2:30am. The hike takes around 4 hrs to the summit, on a clear day the Kilimanjaro’s Kibo summit is visible. Enjoy the sunrise and after a brief picture session descend to Shiptons camp for full breakfast and later on descend to Judimere campsite for Dinner and Overnight.

  • Day 4: Judimere – Nairobi

     Altitude: 3300m – 2650m

    Hike Time: 2hrs

    After breakfast descend leisurely down to the park gate where you will meet up with your transport back to the city where the tour ends.

TECHNICAL CLIMBING GEAR FOR NELION AND BATIAN PEAKS

The weather can vary hugely but commonly you would climb in quite a few layers. For example a base layer, insulated Gilet, softshell jacket, hardshell jacket, thin softshell trousers, hat under your helmet, liner socks inside your climbing shoes and possibly close-fitting fingerless gloves. You may also need a warm belay jacket at stances.

CLIMBING HARDWARE

  • Pair of 50m half or twin ropes
  • Climbing Harness
  • Helmet (& warm hat/balaclava to fit under it)
  • Rock shoes (recommended not to have too tight a fit and consider wearing thin socks inside)
  • Belay/rappel plate to suit double rope above
  • 3 HMS Karabiners
  • 2 locking Karabinas
  • 4+ short slings
  • 2x Prussic loops
  • Nuts/wires size 1-9
  • Cams size approx 0.5, 1.5, 2.5 (more if you have them) to suit cracks approx 20-50mm wide

  • Small (~25L) climbing pack – Large enough for a spare warm belay jacket, gloves/mitts, emergency bivvy/blizzard bag, ~1 Litre of water, sweets, chocolate, camera.
